  49.      SDN  International is  Fidonet's Shareware  Distribution Network  since
  50.      January  1989.   The trusted  and  respected  pipeline to  hundreds  of
  51.      bulletin boards among Fidonet's 30,000 and growing participating boards
  52.      - SDN files are all author-direct.
  53.  
  54.      Beyond that  - SDN distributes  through satellite, Internet  and online
  55.      services such as BIX and is always open to other avenues.

  57.      SDN reaches all  of North America and into Europe  such as Switzerland,
  58.      Denmark, Germany and further.  SDN is imported into the United Kingdom,
  59.      Australia, Israel, Puerto Rico and many other countries.

  61.      Software distributed  by SDN  is Shareware  for Intel  based computers,
  62.      usually called  'IBM' or 'MSDOS  compatible'.  United  States Copyright
  63.      laws defines shareware as 'Try before  you buy'.  When you obtain files
  64.      by SDN  distribution you should read  the copyright and license  of the
  65.      program you have  obtained to learn the  author's terms of your  use of
  66.      the author's product.   Shareware is a distribution method  and you are
  67.      expected to  use the  product for a  limited time,  set by  the authors
  68.      terms, and pay the authors asking  registration price if you decide you
  69.      would like to use the product longer.

  76. ─┘ 2. WHAT ARE SDN FILES └──────────────────────────────────

  78.      SDN files  are shareware author's programs  that have been sent  to SDN
  79.      International for  processing and distribution  to bulletin  boards and
  80.      online  services.  Each  file is  a compression  of individual  program
  81.      files into one archive for easy downloading.

  83.      As an example,  you might see this type  of listing on the  BBS you log
  84.      into.

  92.      NOTE: files  with a .SDN extension  are older SDN distribution  and are
  93.      also ARJ compression - use ARJ to decompress.

  95.      Each archive file  contains an author's complete  program in compressed
  96.      form.  When you  download one file you have the  complete program ready
  97.      to  be un-packaged.   The  file is  named to  reflect  the program  and
  98.      version number it contains.

  100.      SDN files,  before the release  of ARJ  v2.41 (January 1993),  could be
  101.      decompressed with  NoGate Consulting's  PAK compression  utility.  .SDN
  102.      files since  1993 can  be decompressed using  the ARJ  2.41 compression
  103.      utility or a  newer version.  The compression  utility named ARJ241.EXE
  104.      can be  found for  downloading on  most of  the better  bulletin boards
  105.      where .SDN's are posted.

  107.      Each file can  be verified for authenticity.  It has  been secured with
  108.      two tamper-proof seals.  The first seal  can be tested with the ARJ.EXE
  109.      test feature.

  126.      The  second seal  can be  tested either  with the  FileTest utility  by
  127.      PaceSoft or SDNTest posted at The SDN Project BBS and most BBS'es where
  128.      you find SDN files.  If it passes both  test you can be assured it is a
  129.      genuine author-direct  SDN distribution  with contents  exactly as  the
  130.      author intended.

  155.      Inside every SDN there  is a pure ASCII text file that  you can read to
  156.      get a description of the program.  The files name is SDN.ID.

  168.      On most BBS'es where you can find SDN files you may also find a message
  169.      area in  the message  base where  copies of  each program's  SDN.ID are
  170.      posted.  This makes for easy browsing of all the SDN programs posted at
  171.      the BBS.  What's neat about this is  most BBS'es save your place in the
  172.      message base  when you  leave it..  so  the next time  you login  - the
  173.      messages in that area  that you have not read yet  are all new arrivals
  174.      since the last time you were on.

  183.      Shareware is not free, it is 'Try  before you buy'.  This means you are
  184.      free to try the program and it's features out for a set period of time.
  185.      Read the  author's information  to find  out how  long.  It  is usually
  186.      about 30  days.  If, after  that time, you  wish to continue  using the
  187.      software  -  then  you  are  bound to  send  the  author  the  required
  188.      registration  fee.  SDN  does  not assist  in  registering software  ..
